Australia's Massive Distances - Birdsville

Some of the signs here always amuse me with how far away they sign places.
This one shows just how remote Birdsville in the outback desert really is.

Although when you here about inexperienced travellers wanting to see the whole lot in 3 weeks perhaps you can understand.
This isn't the biggest I have seen here - on the Warrego Hwy out of Brisbane there is a sign for Darwin - 3437 kms! Can anyone beat that? I am interested.

This is the view from the inside of Tunnel Creek in Western Australia looking out through a roof collapse in the tunnel. Quite an eerie place.

Wildlife Wednesday 19 - Thorny Devil

This cute little guy is a Thorny Devil and lives in the deserts of outback Australia. It is pretty easy to see where he gets his name! Wouldn't want to bite him if you were a predator would you!

The Pinnacles, Nambung National Park near Cervantes

This amazing place near the coast of Western Australia is Nambung National Park or 'The Pinnacles'. It is a very strange place with these fomations jutting up out of the sand.

Waterfalls of Atherton

I know, I know... you are all missing me! Sorry.
To make it up to you I have decided to post 2 waterfalls from Atherton Tablelands. First up is Zillie Falls, then the enchanted Ellinjaa Falls
Both very beautiful after a long while of dry outback!

Wildlife Wednesday 18 - Soldier Crabs

These crabs amazed me as I had never seen them before. They all walk along the beach together and when danger approaches they burrow into the sand in unicen. As soon as you walk away they all pop back out.

Famous old Hotel - Birdsville

This hotel is an outback icon, Birdsville is famous for it's races held in September. This hotel for that one day must be the busiest in Australia. For a town with a pop of 120 that is pretty good going!

Night Light - Paronella Park

This is the strange and wonderful Paronella Park. It was made completely from concrete by an eccentric Spaniard for his wife. Look up the story online for the low down - an amazing tale!

Gordon Dam - Tasmania

This perfectly still water was taken from the amazing Gordon Dam in central Tasmania. The road out here was 90kms long and it just ended.... the only way out was all the back the way you came! Well worth the effort mind you.

Bum Burners in Hahndorf - German Village

When we saw this we just laughed out loud. Hahndorf is not far from Adelaide and is a German style town. Sausages are a popular delicacy.

Sunset in Kalbarri

This may be the most dramatic sunset I have ever seen! Making this one of the favourite photos we took on the trip. It was taken in Kalbarri, Central Coast, Wetern Australia. This area is famous for it's geological features, particulalry 'Natures Window' - Picture to come.... one of these days ;-)

The Bunngle Bungles

This amazing plave was amazingly only discovered in the 1980's. Truly unbelievable. Now the Bungle Bungles or Purnululu National Park is a world renowned national park. The drive here is strictly only 4x4 and pretty rough. Well worth it though.
Shame we had a cloudy day.

Through the Window - Old Parliament House, Canberra

In Canberra everything has been designed in a particular way for a particular reason. This is a view of Old Parliament House from new Parliament House down the avenue with 'New Houses' fountain. Very clever...

Outback Fuel Station - Mungarannie

These are the fuel pumps at Mungarannie station. It is the only stopping point for travellers on the 600 odd km outback road - The Birdsville Track.
There are no sealed roads in any direction for 100's of kms and we found it very strange that even the fuel station is unsealed. Hate to see what it looked like in the rain!

Mountain Town - Omeo

It was a last minute decision to travel the Great Alpine Road and we were glad we did. One night was spent in Omeo and we did a little exploring. This shot shows how dry it was around here. That rain cloud threatened but did not drop it's load!
I love the contrast between the golden land and the dark sky.

Wildlife Wednesday 17 - Quoll

This is a rare Quoll we caught glimpse of in Tasmania near Strathgordon Dam. These are apparently very shy creatures, this one however came right up to us and started smelling my boot. Brave little critter!

Catseye Beach, Hamilton Island

This photo was taken before I lived in Australia. We came here for a holiday and I loved it. Hamilton island in the Whitsunday Island group was one of the places we stayed. Heidi took this shot, we couldn't have lined the boats up better if we tried. Ahh Paradise..

Wangi Falls - Litchfield National Park

Once again to the fabulous Litchfield National Park, this is Wangi Falls.
Great place to cool off and play in the waterfall. For those of you who read our trip blog, this is the place Heidi rescued the guy who couldn't swim!

Perth Wheel

Apologies for my recent spate of missed posts. Life has been busy!

As appears to be fashionable these days, Perth has a observation wheel. It is set by the water and offers awesome views.
