Katherine Gorge

Aboriginally known as Nimitluk National Park, Katherine Gorge is on the way into (or out of) Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory.

They have a great camping ground in the park and the whole area is very scenic.
This shot is taken from the top of the Gorge looking along the Katherine River

Film Location - Kakadu National Park

This shat was taken in the amazing kakadu National Park in Australia's Northern Territory.
I am relaibly informed that the area you see was part of the filming location for Crocdile Dundee

Truly amazing landscape......

Kings Canyon

This contrasting shot was taken under the clear skies of Kings Canyon.
I still never tire of seeing the red earth against the aswesome blue sky.
We spent the night after Kings Canyon on a station even though it was 25C in the day it got down to near freezing that night. In a tent that's pretty cold!!!

Kata Tjuta - The Olgas

This is the famous neighbour of Uluru in the Northern Territory. It is a significant Aboriginal sacred place. The drive from uluru to here is around 30 mins and definitely worth it.

Daly Waters Pub

This in one of 'THE' famous outback pubs and to see this beutiful tree in flower there was a bonus. This pub also boasts Australia's most remote set of traffic lights!! A wonderful place to stop for a refresher.

Wildlife Wednesday 19 - Thorny Devil

This cute little guy is a Thorny Devil and lives in the deserts of outback Australia. It is pretty easy to see where he gets his name! Wouldn't want to bite him if you were a predator would you!

Wangi Falls - Litchfield National Park

Once again to the fabulous Litchfield National Park, this is Wangi Falls.
Great place to cool off and play in the waterfall. For those of you who read our trip blog, this is the place Heidi rescued the guy who couldn't swim!

Uluru Climb

This interesting shot was taken after I made the momentus climb to the top of Uluru (Ayers Rock) The small things you can see on the ground are cars and campers! I felt like I was up as high as a plane. The climb is VERY steep and tiring - it should not be attempted by the nervous or unfit.

Crocodile Warning Sign - Kakadu National Park

This was our first real warning of the large Saltwater Crocodile. Pretty scary to think that you can't walk down the road as you may be eaten!
Needless to say we drove!

Kings Canyon, Northern Territory

Kings Canyon is a major attraction in the southern region of the Northern Territory. Obviosly not as major as Uluru though. This shot was taken from in the canyon looking up the walls, pretty immense place.

Outback Road - Plenty Highway, NT/QLD

This picture was taken out of the window as the car was rumbling along a dirt road called The Plenty Highway. This road is a pretty good shortcut if you want to travel between Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and Mt Isa in Queensland. There is only one fuel stop on the way though and it is a homesteads back garden. At $1.90 a litre it's not cheap either!
We drove 700kms on this road in one day - great memories though we were a little over the dust by the end of it!

Wildlife Wednesday 9 - Camel

Most of you will know that Camels are not native to Australia, they are however now roaming wild in the outback and are very successful at it. So much so they have become a pest. They were brought over by middle eastern traders and were great for the harsh outback condidtions. Unfortunately for native Australian fauna a lot were released when no longer needed. Still... we enjoyed this rare sighting - we were on the way to Kings Canyon in the Northern Territory.

Wildlife Wednesday 8 - Saltwater Crocodile

We took a Crocodile Tour on the Adelaide River, Northern Territory to find this guy. It was a very strange knowing that if you were to fall into the river you were as good as eaten. They say there is a croc in every 80 metres of river up here! The warning signs are everywhere.

Douglas Hot Springs

This is a very popular stopping point on the way to Darwin. Douglas Hot Springs are thermal pools that create an oasis in the dry interior of the Northern Territory. The water here can be so hot that you should test it before jumping in! Due to the currents in the stream we had fun trying to stand with one leg in hot water and one in cold - very strange sensation.

Florence Falls - Litchfield National Park

Litchfield NP is the less well known National Park near Darwin in the Northern Territory. Many say though that it is better than Kakadu ad s it is smaller and more accessible. I would have to agree after going to both.
Here is Florence Falls on a beautiful hot day, naturally we went for a swim to cool off (after we had come to the conclusion that is was a croc free zone!)....

Devils Marbles - Northern Territory

These fascinating stones are truly in the middle of nowhere - near dead centre of the Northern Territory. They are formed by thousands of years of erosion. The land out here is so flat and the wind has shaped them all individually. We stopped here on the way to Alice Springs and had some fun pretending to push these giant rocks over for the camera.

Super Size - Australian Road Train

In a supersized country you need move a lot of things at once to keep the number of long trips down.
One way of doing this is the famous Australian Road Train. Here I caught a Shell one at an outback fuel station. Not sure what his superiors at Shell would say about him filling up at Mobil :-)

First Post.... Uluru / Ayers Rock

My plan is to upload an image that I have captured from around Australia every day (when I have access to the internet of course!) and provide readers with a little info about the destination.

It's difficult to know where to start...
Australia is a country of stark contrast and amazing natural beauty of course, but there are many other interesting things that you see out and about in Oz.
Whilst I am sure many of the images I share will be awesome landscapes I also hope to get a good share of the more unusal as well.

Seeing as this is my first post on this photo blog though, I will go for something very cliche.....

Uluru is a must see for any visitor to Australia - It is truly awe inspiring, when you see it you can't help but keep looking at it!

The main issue for travellers is getting there...
Despite what many people think Uluru (Ayers Rock) is not that close to Alice Springs NT, it is still over 400kms - which is a days drive. Yulara is the closest place to Uluru and is a purpose built modern town to service the many visitors to the famous rock. Accommodation at Yulara ranges from un-powered camping all the way up to hotel suites. There are shops, food outlets, a fuel station and even a bar there.
At the time of writing this, Park entry to Uluru National Park is AU$25 per Adult so be prepared.
