Contrast - Flinders Ranges National Park

One of my favourite all time images, taken in the Flinders Ranges National Park, South Australia.
It is what I imagine Mars would look like if you caould go there...

As I have previously said this is one amazing place and everyone should visit if they get the chance.

Perfect Camp Spot - Murray River National Park

This shot was taken at sunrise from the front of our tent. We were on the SA VIC border not far from Berri. The place was pretty isolated and peaceful.

Tracks in the Sand - Sensation Beach, Coffin Bay NP

Coffin Bay National Park was great fun to drive (4x4) and camp. We crossed a big sand dune to get to this white sandy beach. It was as perfect as it's name suggests - Sensation Beach.

Bum Burners in Hahndorf - German Village

When we saw this we just laughed out loud. Hahndorf is not far from Adelaide and is a German style town. Sausages are a popular delicacy.

Outback Fuel Station - Mungarannie

These are the fuel pumps at Mungarannie station. It is the only stopping point for travellers on the 600 odd km outback road - The Birdsville Track.
There are no sealed roads in any direction for 100's of kms and we found it very strange that even the fuel station is unsealed. Hate to see what it looked like in the rain!

Explosive Road Train - Nullarbor

This slightly scary truck was parked up just as we were about to embark on the long trek across the Nullarbor. We snapped this out of the car window.

Beautiful Sunset, Tractor Beach, Streaky Bay

This must have been one of the best sunsets of our whole trip. It was taken at Tractor Beach, Streaky Bay, South Australia.
I nearly didn't get the shot at all. I was sitting down to dinner when I saw the sky was pink and I had to run a good 300 metres to the beach to ge this view. Well worth the effort.

Flinders Ranges

This is a beautiful shot of an old rugged terrain. The Flinders is one of the most amazing places on this earth. I have plenty of shots from here and I won't be afraid to return to them! Amazing place.....

Dust Storm, Flinders Ranges

This was the amazing view of an early morning dust storm as we drove from our 3 nights in the Flinders to Maree at the bottom of the Birdsville Track.

Tractor Beach, Streaky Bay

This shot was taken with the sun low in the sky as we were looking for a spot to camp for the night. It was taken near Tractor beach, Streaky Bay, South Australia. We had an amazing sun set that night... I'll share it with one of these days!

Time zone change road sign

Here's something you don't see every day. This is an international time zone change but with a slight difference... The town for which this sign is for falls within a state that observes a different time zone. To explain Broken Hill is in New South Wales which is GMT +10 but it observes South Australia time which is GMT +9.5
We passed this sign a couple of times and had to keep changing our watch!
The shot was taken on the move... This explains the blur in the image.

Wine Barrels - Barossa Valley, South Australia

The Barossa is a famous Red Wine growing region north of Adelaide in South Australia. I found some great Shiraz here and one in particular has become a firm favourite. Wine tasting in the Barossa is on my list of must do things in Australia. Penfolds was a particular highlight.

Wildlife Warning, Crossing the Nullarbor

This interesting collection of wildlife can be driven into/run over on the Eyre Highway crossing the Nullarbor Plain in South Australia.
The Animals are Camel, Kangaroo (Obviously) and Wombat. Why the decision to put the exact distance of 92kms and not just a round 100kms is a question I would like the answer to!

Torrens River, Adelaide

This is the very relaxed city of Adelaide and it's Torrens River. Adelaide is a very nice city with a lot of green space. It doesn't get the acolades and attention of Sydney and Melbourne but that's the way they seem to like it around here! Adelaide is the 5th biggest city in Australia and is also the driest. The road into Adelaide is the steepest, longest, fastest downhill run I have ever done - quite unnerving!

Sunset over the Great Australian Bight

This picture of the Great Australian Bight was taken near our camp spot in a Eyre Highway rest area on the Nullarbor Plain, South Australia. We arrived late in the day after a very long 700km drive. We stopped just as the sun was setting as we didn't want to risk the time most Kangaroos venture out on to the road. It was a windy night and we didn't get too much sleep. The rest area didn't have any amenities either and because Nullarbor means 'no trees' going to the loo was interesting!

Lake Eyre

Lake Eyre is in South Australia and the access point we used to get out to it was off the Oodnadatta track. This lake is so big that we went with the hope of seeing water as it was flooding for one of the only times this century, but it was bone dry where we were (The water hadn't flowed down yet!) Apparently you needed a plane to see the water.
Lake Ekye is the sight of the land speed record on July 17th 1964 where Sir Donald Campbell and the Bluebird reached well over 400mph (650 kmh). For me the lasting memory of this place is the vast emptiness and the sky going on forever... oh and the flies!! - Needed to wear a head net to keep them at bay!

Mount Gambier - The Mysterious Blue Lake

This amazing image is of 'The Blue Lake' in Mount Gambier, South Australia.
This image has not been enhanced or had the colours changed. The blueness is seasonal and apparently can be even bluer than this... if you can imagine that!
There is a scientific reason for the blue colour "it revolves around the warming of the surface layers of the lake during the summer months to around 20 degrees Celsius (70 °F), causing calcium carbonate to precipitate out of solution and enabling micro-crystallites of calcium carbonate to form. This results in scatter of the blue wavelengths of sunlight. (thanks wikipedia)"
Anyway, enough of that, we love the lake just because it's blue! :)

Wilpena Pound - Rugged old world

Australia is an extremely old land geologically speaking. The Flinders Ranges is an example of a very old weathered mountain range in South Australia. This shot is of one of the sides of Wilpena Pound, Wilpena pound is a natural amphitheatre created by mountains. A long time ago cattle owners used the pound as a natural barrier to keep their cattle safe.
I love the contrasting 3 colours in this shot and the way the clouds thicken across the image....

Outback Emptiness - The Birdsville Track

The Birdsville Track is a not well travelled route between Maree in SA and Birdsville in Queensland.
The track is 700kms of dirt and gravel and skirts 3 different deserts. It was carved by a delivery driver called Tom Kruse. He was a mailman that delivered to all of the stations along the route. An average delivery run would take 2 weeks in his 2wd Bedford van, but if the weather was bad it could take up to 6 weeks!
The mail is now delivered by plane and the road is so much better that the deliveries come in every 2 weeks on a road train.
Even though the landscape is so empty it is still an amazing site, the view and clouds just go on forever.
(This is one of my favourite parts of Australia...)
